Memorial day is more than just the barbeques and family get-togethers - it is a time to honor and remember our friends and neighbors who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. While many veterans carry visible reminders of their service, others are left with invisible wounds that can resurface during life’s most difficult journey - the end of life.
Research suggests that traumatic histories can significantly shape how veterans experience hospice and palliative care, yet there are very few studies exploring how terminally ill veterans navigate the end of life while living with PTSD. In a 2021 study funded by the VA Office of Rural Health and PTSD, researchers found that PTSD symptoms at the end of life may overlap with common symptoms associated with the dying process, making it more difficult to recognize and address. Clinicians involved in the study observed not only traditional PTSD symptom clusters, but also challenges related to military identity, social acceptance, and family support issues.
For organizations serving hospice and palliative care patients, this research highlights the importance of understanding the unique experiences each patient carries with them. As a nonprofit professional working alongside terminally ill adults and children, I believe compassionate care must go beyond the physical needs alone. Lack of awareness and sensitivity to a veteran’s lived experiences, emotional and psychological needs may go unmet during an already difficult season for both the patient and their family.
This is where Project 4031 steps in. Supporting veterans at the end of life requires more than just their medical care, it requires dignity, compassion, and a willingness to meet patients and families where they are. By creating meaningful memories of joy and light or reassuring a family that they will not become unhoused or go hungry at the end of the month helps ease the emotional burdens the veteran and their family carry during their end of life journey.
This Memorial Day, we remember the sacrifices veterans have made not only through celebration and remembrance, but also through the ways we care for them during life’s final chapter. For Project 4031, honoring veterans means providing them with compassion, support, and dignity at a time when they need it the most. Thank you to all who served their country.
